  • Centella Asiatica or CICA: Hype or truth?

Centella Asiatica or CICA or Gotu kola, as we commonly call it, is a perennial herb that has been widely used in the Asian subcontinent for centuries. Recently it has become a popular ingredient of skincare because of its restorative properties. It is mostly known for its healing properties. This herb is also used as a food ingredient and is served with drinks and salads in Asian countries.

Centella Asiatica contains terpenoid, asiatic acid, madecassic acid, asiaticoside and madecassoside. These ingredients when together act in the form of Centella Asiatica extract. Centella Asiatica is one of the most effective skincare products because of its anti-oxidizing properties and anti-inflammatory properties. This herb is also very rich in minerals and vitamins. It is also widely used for its healing properties. It helps wounds heal and removes the scar from your healed skin.

Let us take a look at all the skincare benefits one can derive from using Centella Asiatica extracts or herbs:

Anti-oxidizing properties– Centella Asiatica contains madecassoside which acts as an antioxidant. It also serves as a source of amino acids. It keeps your skin from prematurely aging and prevents wrinkles and fine lines. Prolonged use of these ingredients on your skin gives you firm, tight and vibrant skin.

Hydrating properties – Centella Asiatica also has hydrating properties which prevent water loss from your skin and improve hydration from within. This herb can work wonders if you have dry and sensitive skin. It reduces redness and dryness from within, nourishes your skin, and gives it a refreshed and glowing look.

Healing properties – Centella Asiatica is widely used for its healing properties. It heals wounds and removes scar marks from your skin. It actively prevents bacterial growth and helps in rejuvenating your skin cells. It also acts as an antiseptic.

Soothing properties – Centella Asiatica also has anti-inflammatory properties. It soothes irritating and rough patches on your skin.

Prevents tanning and revitalizes skin – Centella Asiatica also protects the skin from harmful UV rays. It shields the skin from the sun and prevents excessive tanning and sun damage. It nourishes your skin and revitalizes it with all its natural components.

Centella Asiatica has recently come under the spotlight of the Western beauty world but it has been used throughout the centuries by various cultures. In China, it was considered nothing short of an elixir. Seventeenth-century France widely used Centella Asiatica for its healing properties. It has also been used in other Asian subcontinents for centuries.

If you are looking to add Centella Asiatica to your skincare routine, you can add The Unplugged’s HydraGlow Face Serum. With its “heal, hydrate and brighten” properties, it will definitely bring out a lustrous youthful glow within a matter of weeks.

So, now you know why Gotu kola or CICA or Centella Asiatica should be an essential part of your skincare routine. You can incorporate it into your daily skincare routine and in no time, you will get glowing, well-nourished healthy skin.

  • Skin Science 101

Skin is the largest organ of the human body and even accounts for 15% of our body weight. Yet, it doesn’t get the attention it requires. You may use the same old products daily to sustain, but how do you know if you are using the right ones? We are so stuck up in our existing routines that we don’t care to look further.

With so many skincare products in the market, you have an overflowing bucket of options, but it only makes it all the more difficult to choose. Which product should you truly trust and invest your time and energy into?

We break down skin science into understandable terms, so you can pick the best and believe in the best.

Why the word ‘bioavailability’ is important:

Bioavailability in skincare refers to the degree to which a product will have an active effect once it is made available to the skin. In other words, for example, is the moisturizer readily absorbed into your skin once you apply it? Or is it just sitting on your face?

Many times, we see a thin film of product that is left on our skin, because the ingredients are not permeable. We need a product that has active ingredients that not only help permeation but also retention, locking in the benefits.

Bioavailable ingredients, as the name suggests, also mean that these ingredients act naturally effective, that are easily recognizable to the skin for immediate use. Give back the love of naturally occurring ingredients to your skin, for visible repair and a healthy glow.

Here are some products that are highly bioavailable to the skin!

    • Ceramides
    • Hyaluronic Acid
    • Amino Acids
    • Peptides
    • Glycerin
    • Lecithin
    • Vitamin E
    • Vitamin C
    • Squalane

They will make their way deep into the skin, to give you the benefit that you otherwise expect from synthetically produced ingredients.

These should be the priority ingredients you look out for, the next time you pick a product off the shelf.

  • Vitamin C for Skin: What percentage should you use?

How do I find if my product has Vitamin C in it?

Read the ingredients. Vitamin C is referred as Ascorbic Acid. L-Ascorbic Acid is the one that works the best but it is highly unstable. Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is most commonly used form of Vitamin C as it stable.

How will Vitamin C help my skin?

While Vitamin C in your diet is essential, a citrus fruit bowl isn’t the only way to glowing skin. When applied topically to the skin, Vitamin C accelerates the production of elastin and collagen, which are protein fibers. These promote skin cell regeneration and fight pigmentation, giving you younger, healthier, and firmer-looking skin.

Ok, but why should I get a Vitamin C serum?

When used in the form of a serum, it is very much like the main course of your skincare routine, with all the benefits of selected active ingredients in high concentrations. Investing in a vitamin C serum will mean that it is not only a key contributor to your skin’s health but a really good one.

The concentration percentages are so confusing. Which one should I pick?

A concentration between 5-20% works best for your skin. Don’t try to go overboard with more than 20%, as it won’t give you an extra benefit, but only pose a risk of skin irritation. For instance, the result won’t be any better if you pick one with 30%. It will in fact cause skin irritation and might lead to burns. If you have sensitive skin, or you are a beginner, stick to the lower end of the spectrum by going with 5% as it won’t risk irritation.

When is the best time to use my Vitamin C serum?

In the evenings. It is not the best to use it before you head out into the sun, since it oxidizes when it comes in contact with the sun. It may make your skin a tone darker due to UV ray damage. If you are applying it in the mornings, remember to apply to your sunscreen.

Why does my skin tingle when I use a Vitamin C serum?

The slight tingling sensation means that the product is working its magic. Don’t worry. Vitamin C is a kind of exfoliant, which means that it works by removing the dead skin cells on the outermost layer, causing a bit of a sting. This is only a slight feeling and shouldn’t cause concern. However, tingling is not the same as burning. If your skin has an adverse reaction to the product that you can’t control within minutes, stop using it.

Does Vitamin C have any side effects?

The milder forms of vitamin C in skin care products are often easily tolerated. If you have extremely sensitive or allergy-prone skin, consult a physician or seek medical advice before taking a Vitamin C product for the first time. It is also advisable to do a patch test and discontinue use if there are any signs of extreme irritation.

Why does Vitamin C products come in dark bottles?

Vitamin C oxidizes when it comes in contact with the sun. Always look for this particular trait if you are buying any product with vitamin C.

Product recommendations: Try The Unplugged’s Advanced Repair Serum that has 5% Vitamin C | 5% Mulberry | 2% Hyaluronic Acid | 5% Centella Asiatica or CICA. It is highly recommended for beginners, sensitive skin and acne prone skin.

  • Your skincare guide

Skincare is subjective; having a skin-care routine could mean different things for different people. For me, skincare could be applying an acne-fighting mask but for someone else, it could be lining up all their glowing serums or moisturiser for dry skin. We choose products based on our friend’s recommendation, mom’s experience or a company’s marketing executive’s selling skills. The real question is “Have we ever read and understood the textbook of an ingredients list on every product?” The truth is that we haven’t. We look at the fancy advertising of before and after & choose our miracle product.

There isn’t a RIGHT way to choose a product, of course, and each skin-care routine is necessarily as exclusive and individual as the person following it. But as skincare has become trendier and its definition has become broader in scope, it’s also gotten a little more intimidating and confusing for a beginner to get started. Don’t you agree?

First of all, what is the Skin “care” hype about?

Skin is the largest organ in the human body and it plays an important role in protecting it from any outside pathogens. We eat every day, take baths on time, brush our teeth and go to the office/school/college on time, right? In the same way, we have got to pay some amount of attention to our skin, keep it healthy and let it function properly.

    One step at a time

We all have to age someday but we can surely reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots. All this is achievable by starting a simple skincare routine. Your skin will love EXTRA pampering which always has cosmetic and therapeutic benefits.

Dry Skin, oily T Zone, blackheads, whiteheads are minor skin concerns that can be taken care of easily with a skincare habit. Some major concerns like Eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, skin cancers, hyper-pigmentation obviously demand more attention & treatments.

Even if you do not have any skin concern, having a routine definitely relieves stress and keeps the skin healthy & glowing in the long run. It can be as simple as cleansing, toning and moisturising your skin every day or as extensive as sitting in a bath-tub with a face mask on and a glass of wine in one hand, humming your favourite songs while there are aromatic candles helping you relax. Just the thought of this made me forget all my worries. What if we make it a routine to do it every 15 days? Ok, replace the bath-tub (if you do not have one, like me :D) with your bed, couch, balcony chair, your cute tidy corner or your favourite me-time space. All we are saying is, take out a 10 minute ME TIME everyday day & night for your skin.

I understand making a routine but what exactly do I need to know before I begin?

What is my SKIN TYPE? Every skin concern is related to this one question.

To figure out your skin type, see how your skin behaves without any makeup or products on it a few hours after taking a shower

    • Does it get a little greasy or shiny, you probably have oily skin.
    • Or do you feel dry or flaky, you have dry skin.
    • If you have dry skin in some places and oily skin in others (usually on the T-zone), you have combination skin.
    • If you have none of those things, you’re considered to have- “normal” skin.
    • If your skin gets irritated when you use certain products, if you’ve ever had an experience of an allergic reaction to a product, or if you have certain skin conditions like eczema etc., you may then have what is known as sensitive skin.

Skin-care steps which you have probably read 1000 times but never really followed. Below is a repetition of it

Of course, this routine depends on your skin type. Do not follow a random AM PM routine. We have made it easier for you to understand. Go through AM PM routine per your skin type:

Don’t like using too many products? Just look for the ingredients that suit you and use minimal products

Products that contain specific active ingredients—known as just “actives” by people who have knowledge of skincare. Active ingredients are chemicals or compounds in a product that are actually treating your skin for the concern the product is supposed to treat it for.  For example, if you buy a product to help treat your acne, the active ingredient is the main ingredient that is doing most of the work to clear up your acne.

I was really intrigued by The Unplugged concept of ‘skincare not for the outside world but

for the self’ and I decided to try them.

True to its name their initial skin care products let me unplug from the external and

allowed me to indulge in self love with their exceptional quality product.
